Start with delivery, not the room
Before you pick a model, walk the path from the curb to the final spot with a tape measure. Doorways, hallway turns, stairwells, gates, and low branches all count. Sweaty Yeti includes delivery within 250 miles of the factory — but on-site install equipment rentals are not included, so plan how a finished building gets from the truck to its final spot. The packed dimensions on the final listing are the numbers that matter for the path — not the assembled ones. If the path is tight, say so before ordering; reroutes and redeliveries are where surprise costs hide.

Sauna capacity ratings are optimistic everywhere in the industry: "4–6 person" means four adults comfortably or six friends who like each other. Size for the 90% case, not the annual party — and check sitting headroom on the upper bench, where the heat lives, not just floor area.
Indoor placement
- Weight. Water is heavy — a filled Cold Pod XL is roughly 1,000 lbs. Verify the floor can carry a filled plunge plus its occupants, especially on upper floors or older decks. When in doubt, ground floor on a slab. The Clearlight Sanctuary 2 ships at 450 lbs — plan the path from curb to room.
- Moisture. Saunas release humidity; plunges splash. Plan ventilation and wipeable surroundings, not carpet.
- Ventilation (saunas). Intake vent low near the heater, exhaust high on the opposite wall — comfort and heater efficiency as much as moisture control.
- Ceiling height. Heat rises: low ceilings heat faster and feel hotter. Check sitting headroom on the upper bench, not just standing room.
- Power. Map outlet locations now. The Clearlight Sanctuary 2 runs on a 120V/20A outlet; the Sweaty Yeti Sauna Plunge requires a 60-amp connection (for the rest of the Sweaty Yeti lineup, confirm electrical specs with the brand before the electrician quotes). A third-party chiller for a Cold Pod needs a standard GFCI-protected outdoor outlet.
- Proximity. Near a shower and a floor drain is the dream layout. At minimum, keep towels and a robe within reach.
Outdoor placement
- Base. Level is non-negotiable. A concrete pad is the gold standard; compacted gravel or a reinforced deck also work. An unlevel tub stresses seams; an unlevel sauna never quite sits right.
- Drainage. Grade water away from the unit and away from structures. Plan where a full drain-down goes before you need to know. The Cold Pod's drain tap takes a ½″ garden-hose adaptor (included).
- Exposure. Shade helps a plunge hold temperature; wind and sun age any outdoor unit faster. A simple cover or roofline extends life noticeably. The Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor 2 ships with a free water-resistant cover.
- Power run. The farther the outlet, the more the electrician charges. Pick the spot with the shortest sensible run.
- Privacy and path. You will use it more if getting there is pleasant — lighting for evenings, a clear winter path, and enough seclusion to relax.
